About the Earth Observation Assessment

The Earth Observation Assessment is a periodic evaluation of the nation’s civil Earth observation portfolio and the data and information that it produces. This portfolio comprises satellites, aircraft, ground-based, and other sensors, operated by both the public and the private sector. The Earth Observation Assessment measures the effectiveness of these Earth observation systems in meeting federal government objectives identified within Societal Benefit Areas (SBA).

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) charters the U.S. Group on Earth Observations (USGEO) as a subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Committee on Environment. USGEO conducts the Earth Observation Assessment to inform the regularly updated National Plan for Civil Earth Observations and guide investments in Earth observations to meet the nation’s needs.
